The War for Talent and Open Innovation: "

Much has been written about the war for talent in American business. We need to hire the best and the brightest in order to compete effectively in the global economy. This leads to impassioned arguments for raising the ceiling on H1B visas, and providing provisional green cards to foreign-born graduates with advanced degrees. Open Innovation, however, looks at the war for talent in a somewhat different way.


While people with advanced degrees are useful resources, oftentimes these people are highly trained specialists. In a world of open innovation, specialists are available for collaboration through a variety of mechanisms, such that they need not be part of your payroll in order to help you innovate. As Bill Joy has famously said, “Not all the smart people work for you”.
